Explorator Zharkov, as he is know to people who cannot speak binary, was born and grew up on an Mechanicus Explorator Fleet. Since he was a young man, he was cursed with a terrible affliction, curiosity. He would read all the books available to him, would ask to join every mission outside the ship, would study everything available to him. His collegues warned him, that his curiosity would be the doom of him, but he wouldn’t listen. Instead, his relentless pursuit of knowledge and skill was recognised by his superiors, and he was selected to lead an exploration party planetside. The fleet had found an uncharted planet, that didn’t appear on any starmaps.
It is not clear what they found on the planet, Adeptus Mechanicus has classified the team’s findings. What is clear, is that the experience and what they seen, what they had learned, had changed them irrevocably. A few days after returning to the fleet, the team’s chartist was found dead, apparently suicide. A few days after that, the vox-adept died in an airlock accident. A week later, the Skitarii lieutenant was found without his head. Over the next several months, all members of the exploration team had died gruesome deaths. All, except Zharkov. The Exploration fleet could not protect him from the unknown hunter from beyond. He left his home in the fleet, and journeyd beyond Imperial space in order to escape from whatever it is that hunts him. He offered his expertise to a Rogue Trader ship in the Koronus expanse, in order to keep constantly moving.
Zharkov is still extremely scholarly and interested in the unknown, but it is not out of simple curiosity any more. His quest for knowledge is fueled by the hope that somewhere in the vastness of space, he will find a way to save himself. Every new world, every new book, every new culture is a chance to find his answer and he is willing to risk a lot for those chances. In the process of adding more space for knowledge, his cranial circuitry has erased many of Zharkov’s weaker emotions, leaving fear dominant. Zharkov is a desperate man, grasping at straws and eyeing every dark and shadowy corner suspiciously.
